How to write a handyman punch list for quotes.

Small home repairs get expensive when a tradesperson has to make three hardware store runs because the list said "fix bathroom and hang shelves." Writing one clear line per task lets a handyman bring the right tools, fasteners, and materials on the first trip.

Five details every line on a punch list should include

Whether you have three repairs or twelve, walk through the house room by room with a tape measure and note these five items for each task.

1. Exact room and location: Name the room and which wall, door, window, or cabinet is involved (for example, "Guest bath vanity left door" rather than "cabinet hinge").
2. Symptom, not just a guess: Describe what is happening ("latch bolt hits 1/4 inch above the strike plate when the door closes") so the tradesperson knows whether to plane the door, shim the hinge, or move the strike.
3. Measurements and counts: Give the size of the hole, the width and height of the door, the length of rot in a trim board, or the ceiling height under a fan box.
4. Wall or surface material: Hanging a mirror on hollow drywall with wood studs is a different job from drilling into brick, tile, plaster-and-lath, or concrete block.
5. Parts already on site vs contractor-supplied: List every faucet, ceiling fan, TV bracket, or paint can you have already bought, including model numbers, and state which consumables (caulk, drywall mud, shims, fasteners) the contractor should supply.
