Drywall Repair Scope Guidelocalhandyman.directory

Drywall patch and texture match scope guide.

A drywall patch has four separate steps: securing the backing and drywall plug, taping and feathering joint compound, matching the existing wall or ceiling texture, and priming and painting. A handyman quote that stops at "patch hole" often leaves priming and painting out unless you specify all four steps.

Five questions to settle on any drywall repair quote

Check whether your repair list or contractor quote answers these five items before work starts.

  • 1. Hole size and backing: Dents and anchor holes under 1 inch take spackle. Doorknob holes (2 to 5 inches) take a California patch or mesh backer. Plumber or electrician access cutouts (6 inches to several feet) require wood backing cleats screwed behind the existing drywall and a new piece of 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch board.
  • 2. Hot mud vs air-dry compound: Fast-setting compound ("20-minute" or "45-minute" mud) lets a handyman apply two coats and sand on the same visit, whereas premixed bucket mud needs overnight drying between coats.
  • 3. Texture match (smooth, orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel): A smooth patch on an orange-peel or knockdown wall stands out across the room. State the existing wall texture so the handyman brings a hopper or spray texture can and knocks it down to match.
  • 4. Spot priming vs full corner-to-corner wall paint: Bare joint compound flashes dull through topcoat paint unless primed first. Even with matching leftover paint, aged wall paint in sunlit rooms often needs to be rolled corner-to-corner on that wall plane to blend invisibly.
  • 5. Dust control and ceiling insulation: Ceiling cutouts under an attic can drop loose-fill insulation when opened. Note whether an attic sits above a ceiling patch so the crew brings plastic containment and a shop vacuum.
